Pratt DICE (Design Initiative for Community Empowerment)

DICE is a free year-round design education program that introduces high school students to architecture, fashion, graphic design, and more through Saturday classes and community-based projects. Students explore how design can be used as a tool for social change.

Open to NYC high school students in grades 10–12 from underrepresented or underserved communities; application includes short essays and a teacher recommendation.

Pratt Young Scholars

Pratt Young Scholars is a three-year scholarship program that offers intensive art and design training, portfolio development, and academic support to high school students preparing for college and careers in the arts. Students attend Saturday classes and summer intensives on Pratt’s Brooklyn campus.

Open to rising NYC 10th graders who demonstrate financial need, commitment to the arts, and strong academic motivation.

Princeton Summer Journalism Program

A free, year-long summer journalism program run by Princeton University that includes summer workshops, a 10-day residential campus experience, college prep, and mentorship to diversify journalism fields and explore the connection between media and democracy

Open to current high school juniors in the U.S. or Puerto Rico with a minimum 3.5 GPA, strong journalism interest, and family income under ~$60,000 (or equivalent financial need indicators), with priority given to first-generation college students.

Project SEED (ACS)

Project SEED offers summer research opportunities in chemistry labs for economically disadvantaged high school students, working under the guidance of scientist mentors. Interns gain paid lab experience and exposure to careers in STEM.

High school juniors or seniors who have completed at least one chemistry course and meet the low-income eligibility requirements.

Project TRUE Research Assistant

A paid summer and fall field-research internship at the Bronx Zoo, working in small teams with college and WCS mentors to design and present urban ecology studies of NYC wildlife and green spaces.

NYC high school sophomores and juniors (especially Bronx residents) in good standing with an interest in environmental science,who are comfortable working both indoors and outdoors.

Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PR/HYLI)

PR/HYLI develops public speaking, leadership, and civic engagement skills in Latino high school students through regional trainings and a culminating weekend at the New York State Capitol. Participants debate actual legislation and meet elected officials.

Open to high school juniors and seniors of Hispanic heritage in New York State; must be nominated by a teacher or counselor and demonstrate leadership potential.

Queens Botanical Garden

A year-long, paid internship based in Flushing and Corona through Queens Botanical Garden’s “Growing Justice” program, offering hands-on experience in horticulture, environmental education, and community outreach.

Open to local NYC high school students (especially from Flushing/Corona), with a passion for environmental stewardship and commitment to a year-long program.

Read Alliance High School Tutor Program

Read Alliance trains high school students to work one-on-one with younger children to build literacy skills after school or in summer programs. Tutors earn hourly pay, gain teaching experience, and receive job readiness support.

Open to NYC high school students ages 14–18 with strong reading skills and a desire to work with young children.

Rockefeller University Summer Science Research Program (SSRP)

SSRP places high school students in Rockefeller University labs for full-time mentored research in biomedical sciences over 7 weeks. Students attend seminars and present a research poster at the end.

Current juniors or seniors attending NYC high schools; must be at least 16 years old by the program start date.
